His Eminence Sharpa Choeje Rinpoche visited Minnesota and taught at Khacholing on Sunday July 10. His Eminence is the next in line to assume the Ganden Throne as Ganden Tripa, the head of the Gelugpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. He has served as abbot of Gyuto Monastery in India, and long-time students here will remember him from when he served as the first abbot of Gyuto Wheel of Dharma Monastery when it was first started in the 1990’s.

Enthronement Ceremony

We’re very happy to announce that our spiritual director, Gankar Rinpoche, was installed as Lama Umze (Associate Abbot) at Gyuto Monastery in India on December 27, 2020.  The enthronement ceremony was attended by only the monks of the monastery and a few guests, because of the COVID-1 pandemic.  Rinpoche forwarded these pictures for all of us who could not be there, so we can share the spirit of the day’s events.

After serving his term as Lama Umze, he will next serve a term as abbot of the monastery, and will then enter the line of succession for holder of the Ganden Throne, the head of the Gelugpa order.
